Nerdy IT stuff: Stupid user tricks 1

On starting my new job, I learned 2 new stupid user tricks employed here:

1. Every user should run their web browser from an executable stored on a shared directory. That way, all of the graphics is decompressed on that host, and then sent over the LAN in decompressed form to each client machine. This can increase your network traffic by a factor of 10 or more.

2. Users should run programs that produce a different large dataset every day. The automatic backup program should not have any way of excluding these large datasets from the nightly backups. This can increase your disk storage requirements by a factor of about a million.
