On missing fathers
This morning on my way to work, I was listening to a self-proclaimed expert say that today in America there are many unmanly men, because we have a higher divorce rate and more men being raised by only their mothers, thereby turning them into effeminate metrosexuals.
I was riding the subway through the southeast side of DC at the time, and it struck me that the communities with the very highest rate of mother-only families -- well over 50% in some places -- are poor black urban communities. Yet if you go downtown into the poorest, blackest parts of DC, you don't find a lot of limp-wristed effiminate men eager to talk about their feelings. So I don't completely buy the "absent father, effeminate son" theory.
